Starting to write college scholarship essays may make you shake in your boots. After all, what you write could either win you a sizable chunk of cash, or not. But with some preparation, you can lower your nervousness and improve your writing. Take a look here for a few great ways to kick start your ideas, turn your brain on, and get started.
Finding Brilliant Subjects for College Scholarship Essays

Let’s get into making more topics for your essays. If you haven’t read any grant or scholarship applications, take a little time to look at them, especially the ones you want to win. You may have to invent a topic. Or you may be assigned one, like the Harry S. Truman Scholarship which requires essays that evaluate and appraise serious human and diplomatic concerns of importance today. Many use a simple, short kernel of an idea that you call a prompt to use to build an essay around.
Even with a prompt, the essay will have examples and personal features that you will think of and write. And in most cases, you and your life experience will form part of the essay. If you have more experiences to draw on, you can liven up your writing to provide more depth and create interest that draws your readers into the story.
For example, have you seen Denzel Washington and Forest Whitaker in The Great Debaters? Denzel Whitaker’s character closes the movie with a great speech during a debate. In that speech, he uses stunning detail from his own life. He plays Forest Whitaker’s son in the movie, and Washington’s student. In your essays, like this movie inspired by real event, you will do the same.
Who Awards The Scholarship?

Look at who will award the scholarship. Consider these five ideas to help focus your essay and find out who will evaluate you for the award:
1. What are the organizational purpose or do they have an agenda?

2. Can you go to a website and read the group mission statement?

3. Who has won in the past?

4. Have you looked up the history or the founder for more information?

5. Call and ask for information if you haven’t found any.
After you have a feel for the organization, you can write down the governing principles or goals of the organization. Keep them brief, just a few words each, and make a short list of the ideas and trends you find in your research.
This research doesn’t have to take all day for every scholarship. If the website gives some good background and a mission statement, that should do it. You don’t need to find out the names of the committee, their alma maters, or the name of the founder’s childhood sled (rosebud). You just want a good feel for what will make a good essay and what might not match their values.
Would you give you the scholarship? Why?

Now that you have formed a concept of the group or foundation’s mission, evaluate yourself. Do you consider yourself a good candidate? For instance, the Billiards Education Foundation gives scholarships for high school seniors who play billiards. You have to recognize that if you don’t play billiards, you won’t get this scholarship.
The essay prompt specifically states that you expand on how billiards has touched your life. If you don’t play, you really don’t qualify, because you can’t answer the question with sincerity. Half of you probably laughed when you read this paragraph and the one before, but this organization gives two types of scholarships, one for $5000 over two years, and 7 awards for $1000 each.
As scholarships go, $5000 can go a long way. Take your scholarship essays seriously, and remember who you will write to, and their aims. You also should recruit proofreaders for every essay to look for typos, grammar errors, style, flow and coherence. You want to sound good.
Last, keep applying. Don’t let a little 500 or 1000 word essay come between you and $1000 or $5000 of money for college. Look, that amounts to between $1 per word on up to $10 per word. You can do it.

Let’s imagine you have sent your admittance application to all the colleges of your dream. You have received a letter telling you that you are welcome to your number one choice among those dream schools and you are now jumping up and down in pure joy all day long because of this. When you land on the earth and start to think clearly, the first thing that might appear in your thoughts is likely to be: How do I finance this? Good question! Why not apply for a scholarship or even hundred scholarships?

The way you fill out your college scholarship application is an important factor that determines whether you get the scholarship or not. The right kind of information has to be furnished in the application. Without this it is difficult to get the required scholarship. The information that you give in your scholarship application reveals the real yourself to the college authorities. So care must be taken to fill out each and every column in the application.

In case if you’re filling out your Gate’s Millennium scholarship form, your achievements, recommendations, essays, etc must be filled out correctly. It is better to use your common sense while you fill up your scholarship applications. You have to do a lot of research to find out the type of scholarships that you can apply for. Then seek the applications for such scholarships. You should note that most of the scholarship applications have to reach the authorities well earlier during the fall of senior year. You have to do your research well before. Check out the eligibility criteria carefully before you apply for any scholarship.

Once you have received the college scholarship application that suits your requirement, you have to organize the materials that are necessary for completing the application. Make a note of the last date of submission of the application to the authorities. This is necessary so that you file your scholarship application well before the deadline. Some of the scholarships require you to furnish some special documents for that scholarship. Make sure that you are attaching them with the application. Do not leave any item blank in the application. Get the assistance if needed to fill it out. Always print or type the application so that it is legible.

The essays that you write should be read thoroughly to identify any spelling and grammar mistakes in it. Correct them. Always make a copy of the documents that you send. Double check your application and submit them well before the deadline.

College scholarship essays seem impossible the first time you write one. Here you will learn why scholarships require these essays and pointers on how to improve your writing. You’ll have more vivid examples of how you have overcome, learned, and grown. Let’s get started.

Why do I have to write a Scholarship Essay?

The foundations, committees, universities, some grant giving agencies and so on need you to write college scholarship essays for three reasons. Once you see the reasons, I think you will feel better about writing. And you’ll find ways to make your writing better as well:

1. You demonstrate capability. By writing a sample for to win a scholarship award, you prove you can write well. Always write the essays yourself, as this keeps the essay unique, shows integrity, and avoids plagiarism. Even if you have a company evaluate your writing and offer suggestions for improvement of an essay, you created the idea and the details in it. This small essay example provides a window into your academic abilities, and lets the scholarship committee see that you value education and will finish the degree or program you plan to attend.

2. Your goals match the goals of the scholarship giver. Do a little research on the scholarship you want to receive. What does it stand for? Can you find a mission statement or purpose? Perhaps you can read old press releases or news stories, too. Many groups, especially businesses and foundations, give away scholarship money or a grant to further their own purposes. They want to award the money to a person with similar principles.

3. Your essays speak for you. In any scholarship essay, you will provide some detail or experience from your own life. Reviewers see you through these details, and decide if they want you to represent their mission. Once you have received the scholarship, you can reflect on them for better or worse. Of course, you can see that you will want to present the best of your life. Not a rosy picture, but the real you, when you overcame, learned an important principle, or succeeded in spite of the odds against you. Or even a failure that taught you how to be a better person.

Your essays will present a small portion of you and what you have learned during the course of your life college scholarship essays. The essay provides the scholarship committee reassurance that you will be a good recipient and utilize the scholarship award to further their purposes and finish your studies to become a contributor to society.

For example, you usually won’t find the beef council giving scholarships to vegetarians, or Wal-Mart handing out money for essays that talk about limiting urban sprawl. Their values and future plans don’t go with these applicants.

After you have written a few scholarship essays, they will become easier. Plan on spending some time brainstorming. Make sure you stick to the guidelines in the application, such as for length. Always have some one proofread your article for mistakes, style, and flow. If possible, your proofreader should be a better writer than you, perhaps an English teacher, teacher assistant, or a professional writer.

Keep a copy of every essay you write, in case you can use it again. Also, you may be able to use a class essay for a scholarship application, or vice versa. When you have a topic assigned on an application, you may have to do some research before you can start writing. Spending a little time on this step will help your writing immensely. Some scholarships only require a personal statement, others want a full blown essay. In either case, reviewers will read your essay and either award you money or not, so make it great.

For your best chance to win more awards, apply for as many as possible. Don’t quit. If you can pass high school English, you can write one of these essays and win some money for college, but you have to apply!

              Need Scholarship Funding

So you need funding for college but you have been getting the run around? Sound like your situation? Well there are a few things that you need to look out for to avoid getting the run around from useless websites loaded with useless information. Stay away from a scholarship website that has a pop up immediately asking you to sign up for a free offer, as soon as you visit the webpage. Avoid websites that charge you a fee to access their “College Funding Database” or Scholarship Database. As an educator I feel obligated to provide free information for academic advancement to everyone including my students. I went to college for free and I am currently going to Graduate school for free. I want you to do the same thing without paying one cent for information!

College Funding Available to Employees

Are you currently employed and have plans to go to school? Well you may not know that your employer may be willing to pay for your college with funding that they have set aside. I found this out before I was even hired at my job. My job is under a organization called CREC. My job has a partnership with the college (Saint Josephs College) where I attend grad school. So I get a tuition waiver for courses. However Crec has tuition reimbursement, as most jobs do. The deal is that I have to work for 2 years for CREC and they will pay for my college tuition or reimburse me for it all! Isn’t that wonderful, you bet your scholarship.

Anyhow most employees don’t even realize that their job will reimburse them for going to school. And if you are a teacher you get a lot more tuition breaks and college benefits. There are programs that will pay for your college if you agree to teach for a few years in an Urban School. I currently teach in an urban school and it is wonderful. I actually grew up in the same city where I am currently working and I definitely feel like I am giving back to the community.

If you plan to start up a College or University education one of the first problems you have to address, is how to finance it. There are many sorts of financial aids for students not matter which education you plan to take or the school you consider to study at. In addition to Government grants there are a huge load of well known as well as less known scholarships to apply for. The College Scholarship Service Profile is otherwise called the CSS Profile. This is actually an application that is used for applying for the scholarships available in the institutions. This application is available with the College Board of the United States. You can get this application in the colleges that you wish to apply for scholarship. This application has a lot of columns to be filled up which is sure to give the institution to scrutinize the application for the scholarship easily. It gives a detailed look at the applying student’s profile clearly so that the institution can decide whether to grant scholarship for that student or not.

The student’s financial status and that of the parents of the student are also revealed in the CSS Profile. This profile reaches the institution usually earlier than the FAFSA. This makes the institutions to make a decision on the scholarship even before they get the FAFSA. Financial aid decisions are made in the colleges that have early acceptance programs for the student’s admission. This decision is made quite before the New Year. The FAFSA is available only after the New Year. That is why the CSS profile is more useful for most of the institutions. After the student joins the college based on the CSS Profile they have to fill up the FAFSA which is the official financial aid application. The colleges would then make any adjustments if needed to the financial aid that was granted based on the CSS Profile.

The College Scholarship Service Profile can be filled up online on the College Board’s website at https://profileonline.collegeboard.com/index.jsp. To complete this profile online you have to register with them online. You might need a credit card or a checking account to fill up and submit this profile to the College Board. The details of the colleges and institutions that use this CSS profile are also given in the College Board’s website. A guide to fill up the form is also available online. This is the fastest way to get your profile submitted to the College Board.

If you have looked at the sky rocketing costs of college these days and do not have the comfort of a college scholarship in your back pocket, you are probably taking Tylenol by the case. There is tuition, which if it is based by the credit hour, would lead you to believe that colleges are actually wealthy financial institutions. There are books, which again appears to be one of the biggest rackets going based on outrageous costs. And then you need to consider living expenses, such as a dorm or apartment, and eating and transportation. And after you have considered all of that, you will still need some spending money.

All in all, it appears to cost more than the gross national output of most third world nations at the end of four years. And with today’s pressures and activities, it is almost more than a full load to actually complete the degree requirements so that you can actually graduate in just four years. Studies are showing that most students today are taking five years, just for an undergraduate degree.

The answer to this, which a very surprising number and high percentage of people have not yet figured out, is a college scholarship. Most people think that a scholarship is only awarded to the top football jock or the class valedictorian or the outstanding musician who always sits in first chair. But the reality of the situation is that college scholarships are routinely awarded to students based on virtually no other criteria other than that they applied for it!

While students who can also demonstrate or document a financial need for a scholarship are generally given a higher priority, this is not always the case. You need to remember that this is a tax write-off for the companies and corporations who are offering many of these scholarships, and while most of them would like to see you study in a field of work that they endorse, the bigger motivation for them is to get the tax write-off as well as having their company appear in a good light from a public relations standpoint. In other words, you would think highly of a company who awarded you a full ride scholarship, even if your field of study was computer engineering and their product offering was baby blankets.

One of the things that is of critical importance when you fill out an application for a college scholarship is to complete every single piece of information that is requested on the application form. Do not omit anything and be brutally honest about it. One of the quickest ways to get disqualified for a college scholarship that you may have otherwise been awarded is for the sponsor to find out that you have lied or stretched the truth on the application form.

Regardless of how many scholarships you apply for, one of the sources of funding for your college education should be the FAFSA financial aid form. These are readily available at the college’s admissions office, and they can also provide guidance to you in filling it out if you need help.

Do not allow a lack of funding to prevent you from getting a good college education. The number of available college scholarships rises every year, and many even go unawarded simply because nobody applied for them!
