Is my second-cousin eligible for military scholarships?

March 31st, 2010 by

She only has very loose ties to the military; her great-grandfather (my grandfather) was in the Army. Said cousin was adopted out of the family, too, which probably makes the ties even looser. Is she still eligible for military scholarships?

Not sure what you mean by ‘military scholarships.’

Scholarships to the military academies to not require any special kind of relationship to somebody in the military.

The services offer various military scholarships to their members without regard to family ties.

There may be financial aid/grants provided by state and local governments to family members of military members, but the ones I am familiar with require a very direct relationship–a child, for instance.

Cousins, nephews, nieces, and the like would not generally qualify.

To be eligible you must have a parent on active duty or who is retired, the survivor of a deceased member, or have a current military dependent I.D. card. You must also be planning on attending full-time. So, the answer is no. However these rules do not apply when applying to any of the Service Academies, she would be eligible to attend them provided she meets the requirements of course.

    I don’t believe so, sorry…

However, YOU might be!! Good news for you!

Most scholarships are for the children of military, but there are a few here and there that include grandchildren as well. I’m actually eligible for a scholarship because my grandfather was a Seabee in the Navy.

So you should check into it.
